Ron Paul: "A History of Speaking The Truth" OR Lying to the American People Should Be A Crime
Lying to the American people should be a crime!
At a tea party, a former private investigator explained to me how much faith he had lost in law enforcement, after working in their shadow for some time, and learning that lying to American citizens was considered, by many of these public servants, as standard procedure.
But these corrupt attitudes are by no means a special domain of law enforcement agencies—nearly every word coming out of the mouths of some law makers in Washington D.C. is calculated to mislead, if not to outright lie, to the American people, on a regular basis. The president, the CIA, the director of national intelligence, congressional mouthpieces, etc., all have blatantly misled the American people, ON PURPOSE!
But the government won't tolerate lies from the people. NO! It is a major crime to be caught lying to, or even slightly misleading, an agent or agency of the United States government! So serious, in fact, that in a great many investigations, the targets end up being prosecuted for LYING during the investigation, rather than for the alleged crime they were originally being investigated for! Often, this is because the government simply has very little provable evidence to convict a suspect on, so they catch their 'presumed guilty' target in a lie. Then they call it obstruction of justice, or some other legalese that simply means 'lying to the government'.
But wait a minute here! I thought "We, the people" WERE the government of the United States? If it is a crime to lie to agents OF the government, then shouldn't it be DOUBLY criminal for one of those agents or representatives to lie TO THE ACTUAL GOVERNMENT, the PEOPLE??? I think it would be only fair.
One of the BIG reasons that I love Ron Paul, is that he has a history of being up front and HONEST with people! I can find no subversive, hidden agenda, as I discovered coming from the present administration, and as I see worked out in congress every time a bill goes to a vote with little consideration and little debate. They go without debate, not because they aren't debatable, but because secretive political bosses have determined that debate and openness will undermine their ability to pass the laws—to shove un-American legislation through congress. This is especially true if the average American gets wind of the attempt, between watching all of the obsessive, but meaningless fluff or gruff stories the media often uses to change the subject from REAL issues they don't want you or me to know about!
This was the process for pushing the so-called Patriot Act, a law that really had VERY LITTLE to do with 9-11 terrorism, most of it having already been written up by ideological activists subversive of our constitution, who have for a long time wanted to see the government gain much more power over our private lives. The legislation was just sitting on shelves awaiting the "right time" to spring it on the American people.
The ideologs who have always felt we enjoy way too much freedom in America, knew all too well, that their legislation would NEVER get passed under normal circumstances, but when terror struck, they saw a golden opportunity. However, in order to shove through congress this massive defacement of our Bill of Rights, they had to use deceptive tactics—tactics like naming the legislation the "Patriot" Act, implying that if you opposed it, you were not patriotic (in a time of frenzied patriotic feelings in America!). Then they rushed the legislation to a vote, using lying rhetoric to associate this OLD legislation with the emergency of 9-11, thus giving legislators all of 15 minutes to review one of the most convoluted and controversial laws ever enacted in our history. The lies about the Patriot Act never stopped (even to this day), and even to this day, the Patriot Act has been used (abused) almost exclusively for non-terrorism related efforts to obtain absolute control over individual American lives, to peer into banking records, to gaze upon private matters, to listen to private conversations, to seize private property.
Lies have been used so often, in fact, during the Bush administration's civil liberty grabs that it would exhaust you AND me to enumerate every instance here. Lies, in the form of legalistic euphemisms, have been used again and again in regards to 'Total Information Awareness' (the government wanted to know EVERYTHING about EVERYONE EVERYWHERE), in regards to torture (remember Bush's "young professionals" comment?), about NSA wiretapping, to name a few. Then there is the re-naming of only a PART of the illegal spying program, to the deceptive title of "Terrorist Surveillance Program", though that lie was exposed as being a lie during the congressional questioning of now defamed Alberto Gonzales. The reality is, that when Americans discovered that the government WAS trolling through all of their private information and illegally wiretapping their calls and web communications, the administration knew that it would have to calm public alarm, in order to prevent impeachment! Thus the lie, that the program was limited to terrorism. It had NEVER been limited to terrorism, nor was terrorism even its first cause! The government was rebuffed by Qwest Communications for their attempt to violate the constitution with the SAME program, back BEFORE 9-11 ever happened! Nor was there ever such a thing as the "Terrorist Surveillance Program" until after the public had discovered the illegal NSA program. All that the government did at that time, was to separate the program into two parts, and then to rename the terrorism half of it, the TSP, and ONLY ADMIT THAT NEWLY DEFINED HALF!!! LIARS! Gonzales was FORCED to essentially admit this cover-up, and we've heard little of the TSP since then!
This pattern is chronic! The same was attempted in the so-called "Protect America Act" (see HERE), and lies are constantly flowing in regards to giving immunity to the telecoms corporations who DIDN'T rebuff the illegal government requests (as Qwest DID) to violate your and my constitutional rights! Misleading discussion and deception of purpose has also been used in the so-called 'Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Act', which will essentially make thinking a punishable crime, and give the government the power to label any of its critics, terrorists. Now another dangerous over-broad law relating to illegal or obscene images is being shoved through congress, without going to committee or receiving ANY debate, and they are calling it 'SAFE', though it is anything BUT safe for liberty, free speech, or for the free availability of wireless internet access. But everyone, it seems—except for the few daring honest souls like Ron Paul—is afraid to be seen opposing any politically charged legislation purporting to be about patriotism, about protecting America or about protecting children. It seems like the more egregious and dangerous a law, the more the title borrows terminology of our deepest American values—thus asserting, this law CANNOT be bad! Someone has commented, that if the congress ever comes up with a law named the "Mom and Apple Pie Act", then we are REALLY in trouble!

We've known for a long time that our international spies routinely lie, but it has also been revealed by insiders that the lying does not stop at the level of deceiving our international enemies, but continues even to the point of making false official statements to the media, i.e. to the American people. Neocons have argued that to be successful the government MUST deceive the people, but I just cannot get my mind around how this can be so, and how we can have such a secretive and closed government, if we, the people ARE still the government! It has become abundantly clear to me that it was this kind of official lying, which misled the American people about the REAL motives for going into Iraq, just as the REAL motives for wanting to attack Iran, are not always so evident to the average person, nor are the REAL reasons for the government to so often fall back on that obscene plea of "state secrets" every time its actions are challenged in court. Somehow, this HAS TO BE STOPPED!
I see a need for honesty in government, and straightforward motives, which I only see possible under a Ron Paul administration, at this point! Ron Paul has promised to do his best to return the government to the PEOPLE. One of the best things that could be said about Ron Paul, was said by Adam Curry in his recent video endorsement of Ron Paul. He points out that Ron Paul has a "history of speaking the truth"! What MORE could we want at a time like this, from a candidate for president???
Any time someone says, "There ought to be a law", I normally cringe, because we have far too many laws, already, for a so-called free society, but this is my one exception. I say, there ought to be a law against ANY government official lying to ANY citizen for ANY reason! I am so SICK of not being able to trust a single word that local, state or national agents of our government tell us! It is why I became so very disillusioned, and it is one of the major reasons I have become so attracted to Ron Paul's campaign; because I don't see the usual double speak and legalistic speech in what he says! Ron is as genuine as the pure gold and silver he wants to back up our monetary system!
